Made of Metal

I met her in a dream,
the quietest of places,
the perfect little hideaway
to try to get away from
the giants that our days brung,
the lies and all the makeup,
the hiding and the trying
and the prizes and the paycuts.
We sighed out expectations,
freed the tension from our backs
and diamonds from our faces.
We weren't crying; we were maps.
We were treasure. We were tracks.
We were heaven in a basement.
Our arms were made of wax;
as I covered her, she bathed me.
I told her she was perfect,
and she told me the same.
We rode a wave of grace and
screamed each other's names.
We made the night a baby
and held it there between us.
We knew we had to love it.
We knew we couldn't leave it.
We knew we couldn't wake up.
But we knew we were dreaming,
and we knew that we were floating
in an in between that's fleeting,
and we both knew, any moment,
eyes would open and we'd be in
different places, missing something
we couldn't remember.
She was made of metal;
I was meant to lay
my ear to her side
and hear what she'd say.
We were meant to be;
we were not meant to stay.
We were made of dreams
and dreams are meant to fade.
She was made of metal;
I was meant to lay
my ear to her side
and hear what she'd say.
We were meant to be;
but only 'til we changed.
We were made of dreams
and dreams are meant to fade.
I caught a glimpse of her,
one morning, wide awake.
She was gorgeous purity
and sureness in a tiny frame,
tons of water running forward,
rushing toward me, and I came
to jump right off the high dive
and to try to ride that wave,
like a pride of lions racing
from the irons of the cage.
But this is not that dream.
Dreams die in the day.
The wilds we released
were caught by time and tamed.
We met in a dream;
then we got in the way.
We doubted what we found and
drowned the sounds we used to make,
and wondered if our love was worth
the space it seemed to take up.
We were both awake but
blind to what we were.
The diamonds from our faces
just made our vision blurred.
The sirens that we sang
became lies that we had heard.
And the secrets that we shared
were too dangerous for words.
The safety that we bathed in,
the truth that washed our skin
was a shotty ladder
wobbling in the wind.
We were meant to shake.
We were meant to break and then fall.
We were meant to wake up small,
human after all.
We were meant to run away
from each other, when it got tough,
and lose touch with the one we found,
once we got up,
and not trust the false fluff
that dreams flaunt to taunt us.
We can't stand on beams
made of magic beans and sawdust.
So after I got what
I could've sworn was perfect,
all there was left to do
was desert it.
She was made of metal;
I was meant to lay
my ear to her side
and hear what she'd say.
We were meant to be;
we were not meant to stay.
We were made of dreams
and dreams are meant to fade.
She was made of metal;
I was meant to lay
my ear to her side
and hear what she'd say.
We were meant to be;
but only 'til we changed.
We were made of dreams
and dreams are meant to fade.

My knee cracks.
I broke a bone in my toe,
a while ago,
but it still hurts when it gets cold.
I'm getting old.
The older moan.
Nowhere close to elderly.
But I'm only getting closer,
so much older than I used to be.
But dreams remain proof to me
that days are always beautifully
constructed epic poems.
I'm just slow on the translation.
I've been prone to hesitation
since I first met my maker
and found out that Now & Laters
might be better eaten now.
It doesn't make a lot of sense,
but knowing that it's gotta end
makes it hard for me to bring
this candy to my mouth.
I've got a long commute.
I waste a lot of time,
deciding what to do
between today and when I die.
When a sailor sees the sky,
he sees the sea's humble reflection,
so whatever way he goes,
he's moving in the right direction.
But what the hell do I know
about that profession.
When I see the sky, I don't know if it's
greater than or less than
or equal to
the people moving under it.
Indecision wins, so I sit
and let the compass spin.
Whether a gust of wind
or just a light breeze,
I'm such a slight leaf,
tied to the end
of this kite's string.
